Our relationship with God is grounded in faith. To truly know God, we must love Him, trust Him, believe in Him, keep His commandments, and live harmoniously with others. The Spirit of God guides us to embody goodness, humility, and simplicity. As we progress in life, we should not become boastful but remain humble, acknowledging that all we achieve is by His grace.
God is an embodiment of love, always thinking of us, putting us first, and sacrificing His time to protect us from dangers and sins. His love is immeasurable, as evidenced by the sacrifice of His Son to offer us salvation and save us from perishing. His love for us is unconditional; He accepts us as we are, even in our weaknesses and imperfections. We are God’s “weakness,” if He has any, and this is why He continues to cherish and save us despite our flaws. God is constantly working on our behalf, always looking out for us, even when we are too busy or distracted to hear Him.
God is the epitome of true love. He adores us regardless of our appearance or weaknesses. He listens to our prayers and makes decisions for our sake, even when we believe He is silent. God feels our pain, shares in our troubles, and is always ready to help. We only need to ask and wait upon Him.
The world is full of mysteries that only God understands. Our limited knowledge and wisdom cannot grasp the depth of these mysteries. But one thing is clear: everything God does or allows is for our benefit, motivated by His compassion. Even when our prayers seem unanswered or bad things happen, we must trust that God, in His mercy, allows everything for a reason. He knows our future and has plans far better than we can imagine. God knows what we need, and when we need it, so we must trust in Him.
Who is God, and what does He mean to you?
We cannot claim to know God if we do not communicate with Him and cultivate a personal relationship. Think about the bond we share with our parents. It isn’t just because they gave birth to us but because we spend time with them, communicate with them, and follow their rules. In the same way, our relationship with God grows through daily communication and obedience to His commandments. Our parents expect us to live by their rules, and when we disobey, consequences follow. However, their corrections come from a place of love and a desire for us to grow and improve.
This is similar to how we grow in our relationship with God. If we do not communicate with Him, we cannot truly know Him. To know God, we must invite Him into our lives and develop a genuine relationship with Him, just as we do with our parents and friends. Furthermore, we must maintain good relationships with others, for how we treat people reflects our understanding of God’s love. Without communication, relationships weaken, whether with friends, family, or God.
God is visible in the lives of those around us, and how we treat others reflects our relationship with Him. Just as friendships fall apart when communication ceases, our relationship with God suffers when we do not engage with Him. We cannot know God’s feelings, desires, or virtues without interacting with Him. We cannot truly understand His goodness unless we establish a basic relationship with Him.
God created us in His image, which means we are to reflect His goodness and kindness in our actions. To know God, we must begin within ourselves. Even if God is introduced to us, only we can choose to accept Him. Just as we choose to accept a friend request on social media, we must choose to accept God’s invitation to develop a relationship with Him.
Building a Relationship with God
A good analogy is attending a conference where the guest speaker is introduced. After the meeting, some may leave, while others stay to learn more and develop a relationship with the speaker. Those who stay will deepen their understanding and potentially maintain ongoing contact. Similarly, the more we communicate with God, the better we will understand Him and the stronger our relationship will become.
God is not distant; He is closer to us than anyone else—our parents, friends, or neighbours. He is always present, watching and knocking at the door of our hearts. He continuously seeks our attention because He loves us and wants the best for us. Developing a relationship with God is a choice we must make, and it requires our consent. Only we can open the door to a deeper connection with Him.
How Do We Converse with God?
It is not enough to say, “I know God,” without taking action. Do we not work towards what we believe in? God is our Father, and we communicate with Him primarily through prayer. Prayer, however, is not the only form of communication with God. Our actions—obedience, love, gratitude, and kindness—are also ways we communicate with Him.
When we pray and express our thoughts to God, we open ourselves up to Him, building our faith and hope. God provides us with what we truly need, even when we are focused on what we want. Sometimes, we pray for things that are not aligned with His will for us, but through communication with Him, we learn to trust that He knows best. Prayer and action go hand in hand: we must not only pray but also work towards what we seek, obey God’s commandments, and show kindness to others.
Just as human laws regulate society, God’s laws are meant for our good. They guide us toward happiness, peace, and fulfillment. Obedience to God’s laws is an act of love, a way to build a lasting relationship with Him. While it may seem that God’s laws restrict us, they actually protect us and lead us to a more fulfilling life. Prayer without action is like listening to our parents without obeying them—it is incomplete. Our relationship with God strengthens when we combine prayer with obedience, faith, and good works.
